When you ask Verboo Code to make a commit, the message ends with a line you did not write: Co-Authored-By: Verboo Code <noreply@code.verboo.ai>. Some teams want that in the history, some teams will not accept it. The /commit-message command handles both without editing a config file by hand.
What exactly does /commit-message change?
Only the attribution line at the end of the commit message. It does not touch the title, the summary or the message style, which the agent keeps writing from your diff and the repository's recent commits.
By default, every commit Verboo Code creates ends like this:
Fix shipping calculation for addresses without a number
Co-Authored-By: Verboo Code <noreply@code.verboo.ai>
Pull requests opened by the agent get a separate line: 🤖 Generated with Verboo Code. That one is not controlled by /commit-message (see below).
How do I see what applies right now?
Run the command with no argument or with status. It shows what you configured and what will actually go into the commit:
/commit-message status
Commit message attribution
Configured: default
Effective: Co-Authored-By: Verboo Code <noreply@code.verboo.ai>
Configured is what is saved in your settings. Effective is the line the agent will use on the next commit. They can differ, for example when an environment variable turns the default off.
What modes does /commit-message have?
Four, plus status. All of them apply to future commits and never rewrite existing ones.
| Command | What happens | Line at the end of the commit |
|---|---|---|
/commit-message off | Turns attribution off | none |
/commit-message set "text" | Replaces it with your own text | your text, as written |
/commit-message co-author "Name" email | Builds a co-author trailer | Co-Authored-By: Name <email> |
/commit-message default | Clears the saved value | the Verboo Code Co-Authored-By comes back |
The code accepts aliases: none and disable work as off; reset and on as default; custom as set; coauthor as co-author.
How do I remove Co-Authored-By from commits?
One command:
/commit-message off
The reply is Commit attribution disabled for future /commit messages. From then on, when you say "commit this", the message ends with the text the agent wrote, no extra line. Check the next commit:
git log -1 --format=%B
How do I put my own text there instead?
Use set with the text in quotes. The outer quotes are stripped and line breaks are not kept, so the text becomes a single line:
/commit-message set "Generated with Verboo Code, reviewed by a human"
Useful when you want to keep a trace that an agent was involved, but in the format your team already uses for audits or changelogs.
How do I credit a teammate or a bot as co-author?
The co-author mode builds the trailer in the format GitHub recognizes. Put the name in quotes if it has spaces, then the email:
/commit-message co-author "Ana Souza" ana@company.com
Commit co-author set to:
Co-Authored-By: Ana Souza <ana@company.com>
The email in angle brackets also works: /commit-message co-author Ana Souza <ana@company.com>. If the email belongs to a GitHub account, that person shows up on the commit as a co-author.
Where is this setting saved?
In your user settings file, ~/.verboo/settings.json, under the attribution.commit key. After /commit-message off it looks like this:
{
"attribution": {
"commit": ""
}
}
An empty string means off. With no commit key, the default applies. Since it is a user setting, it covers every repository where you use Verboo Code on that machine.
What about the pull request line?
/commit-message does not touch it. To change or remove 🤖 Generated with Verboo Code from PR bodies, edit the attribution.pr key in the same file:
{
"attribution": {
"commit": "",
"pr": ""
}
}
Can I turn it off with an environment variable?
Yes, with one precedence caveat. This variable clears only the default commit line:
export VERBOO_DISABLE_CO_AUTHORED_BY=1
If you already set a text with set or co-author, that text wins over the variable. Handy on CI machines or containers where you do not want to depend on a settings.json.
Gotcha: the change applies to future commits. Existing ones keep the old line. If the last commit has not been pushed and you want to clean just that one, run git commit --amend and delete the line in the message. On commits already pushed, rewriting history usually costs more than the line bothers you.
Is it worth keeping attribution on?
It depends on who reads the history. If your team reviews agent-written code differently, the line is a cheap filter: git log --grep="Co-Authored-By: Verboo Code" lists all of it. It is the same trailer that shows up on the commits Verboo Code wrote in our own codebase, covered in Co-Authored-By: how Verboo Code signs the commits it has written. If the repository belongs to a client or has strict message rules, off or set fix it in one command.
To have the agent committing in your repository, with whatever attribution your team decides, start with Verboo Code.
